Fritzges and Pullen Combine for Shutout in Bulldogs 8-0 Victory against Johnson C. Smith

ELIZABETH CITY, NC -- Sophomore Karen Fritzges and senior Akirra Pullen combined to throw a shutout on Friday afternoon as the Bowie State Bulldogs blanked the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 8-0 day two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at Sports Complex.

Fritzges (5-1) started and picked up the win for Bowie State (16-9, 3-0 CIAA), going 3.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit, walking none, and striking out two. Pullen was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going 1.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking none and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Bulldogs were led by sophomore Jayla Hill, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and four RBI. Sophomore Brittany Brewer put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Freshman Sydney Edmond also helped out for Bowie State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Bowie State scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Hill.

BSU then tacked on runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored three times. Two of those three runs scored on a two-run single off the bat of Edmond.

GAME NOTES
» Fritzges and Pullen combined to throw a three-hit shutout.
» Hill drove in four runs for Bowie State.
» Bowie State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed three runs across.
» BSU grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Golden Bulls at a 10-3 clip.
» Sophomore Kayla Evans stole two bases in Friday's game.
» Bowie State pitchers faced 18 Johnson C. Smith hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out three.
» The Bulldogs drew four walks from Johnson C. Smith pitching.
» Hill led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.
» Johnson C. Smith was led offensively by Macken Grant, who went 1-for-2.
» Alis Alvardo led the Golden Bulls pitching staff, throwing three innings of four-run ball.

The Bulldogs will face Livingstone at 12:30 p.m. and Fayetteville State at 3 p.m. on Saturday (3/25).
