Softball Opens Division Play at Lincoln (PA) Saturday

BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State softball team is set to begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division play on Saturday, Apr. 1 at Lincoln (PA). The doubleheader is scheduled to begin with game one at 2 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.

THE SERIES
The Bulldogs are 20-2 against Lincoln (PA) all-time. BSU has won the last 10 matchups against the Lady Lions and own a 12-game winning streak over LUPA entering Saturday's doubleheader. Bowie State is 14-2 on the road agaisnt Lincoln (PA) all-time.

LAST TIME OUT
BSU (21-9) swept Washington Adventist in non-conference action Thursday at the BSU Softball Field by scores of 10-6 and 14-1.

In game one, sophomore Lindsey George (6-4) started in the circle and picked up the win for Bowie State (20-9). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out six. At the plate, the Bulldogs were paced by sophomore Ellianna Henneberg, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI. Senior Akirra Pullen furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Kayla Evans also helped out for Bowie State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

During game two, sophomore Karen Fritzges (7-1) got the win for Bowie State (21-9). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out three. Sophomore Brittany Brewer led the way offensively for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a triple and two RBI. George compiled a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Morgan Joseph also contributed, going 1-for-1 for Bowie State with a triple and two RBI.

BOWIE STATE LEADERS
George leads the team in batting with a .429 average, 29 hits and four home runs while junior Akirra Pullen follows with .35, 24 hits and four home runs. Sophomore Jayla Hill leads the Bulldogs in RBI with 26 to go along with a batting clip of .345, 24 hits and four home runs as well. In the circle, sophomore Karen Fritges has a ERA of 1.23 while Pullen and George post 3.56 and 3.82, respectively. Defensively, sophomore Brittany Brewer has 124 putouts - a team best while sophomore Sydney Edmond and sophomore Kayla Evans both have 40 and 37 assists on the season.

CIAA WEEKLY HONORS
George took home her second-straight CIAA Offensive Player of the Week honor announced by the league office Wednesday. The Fayetteville, Ga., native was force atop of the Bulldogs batting order, finishing 6-game win streak for the Bulldogs with six hits (6-of-14, .429), four runs scored, three RBI, a pair of doubles and a home run at the designated player position. Against Claflin, George went 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. 

LINCOLN (PA)
The Lady Lions are 11-12 overall and 3-3 in league action but own a 2-0 record at home this season. LUPA has not competed since the CIAA Round-Up in which the Lady Lions suffered setbacks on the final day against Johnson C. Smith, 9-0 and Winston-Salem State, 9-1 on Mar. 25.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Bowie State begins Northern Division play on Saturday, Apr. 1 at Lincoln (PA). The conference doubleheader is slated to start the first game at 1 p.m.
