Softball Hits the Road for Weekend Series in North Carolina

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State softball will travel to North Carolina this weekend, starting with a road trip to Raleigh to face the Lady Bears of Shaw in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action beginning Friday, Apr. 21 at 2 p.m. from Worthdale Park. Following the twinbill with Shaw, the Bulldogs will travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. to face the Lady Vikings of ECSU on Sunday, Apr. 23 at 2 p.m. from the South Park Complex.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bulldogs swept Virginia State by the scores of 9-1 and 6-1 on Sunday, Apr. 16. The pair of wins set a program record for the most wins in a season at 28 victories and counting for 2023. The record was previously set at 26 wins back in 2009. Bowie State stands 28-11 overall and 11-0 in the CIAA. BSU is 5-0 in the Northern Division for first place.

THE SERIES VS. SHAW
BSU is 16-8 all-time against SU dating back to 2009. In the last 10 matchups, both teams have split at 5-5 but the Bulldogs have never won on the road at Shaw (0-5). Bowie State swept the Lady Bears 12-0 and 14-5 in 2022.

SHAW
The Lady Bears are 6-17 overall and 5-7 in conference play. Shaw has only played in two games at home this season with a 1-1 record from Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears split with Salem 13-6 and 7-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday. Shaw is sixth in the North with a 2-4 record.

THE SERIES VS. ELIZABETH CITY STATE
Bowie State has had its way with Elizabeth City State over the last few years with a 21-4 record. The Bulldogs are 9-1 against the Lady Vikings in the last 10 matchups including a three-game win streak that featured a 14-6 and 10-1 victories during the regular season. BSU hosted ECSU during the quarterfinal in 2022 in Bowie, Md., where the Bulldogs cruised to a 12-4 win to move in the CIAA Championship. 

ELIZABETH CITY STATE
ECSU is 7-15 overall and 7-7 in the league. The Lady Vikings suffered a pair of road losses at Virginia State (6-5, 8-7) on Wednesday. Elizabeth City State is 2-6 at home this season and currently stand in third place amongst the Northern Division at 4-4.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
BSU will return home to resume action with Virginia Union on Apr. 28 at 3 p.m. from the BSU softball field. The game was halted due to darkness back on Apr. 15, both teams were tied at 8-all heading into the bottom fifth inning. After the completion of the contest against VUU, Bowie State will await the official seeding of the CIAA Tournament with the Bulldogs more than likely hosting a quarterfinal matchup on campus.
