Bulldogs Sweep Virginia Lynchburg, 3-0 for First Win of 2023 Season

BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) over the Tuesday at home inside McKeldin Gymnasium. The non-conference win was the first for the Bulldogs in 2023 as BSU improves to 1-6 overall and VUL drops to 0-4 on the year.

Four different Bulldogs recorded a team-high four kills (Dumebi Odiong, Melisa Anacius, Janee Lewis and Marissa Robinson) and they all recorded a hitting percentage of 1.000. Bracey Gross led the team with five kills and three Bulldogs recorded a block.

» Gross had a match-high three aces in the win.
» BSU never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-21.
» Anacius had a team-high four kills for Bowie State.
» The Bulldogs got a team-high five digs from Gross.
» Bowie State attackers were helped by a team-high 14 assists from Haley Pelham.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Bulldogs opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Bowie State never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 21-20 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza. Bowie State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Bowie State won the second set 25-21 to promptly grab a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored first and never trailed in the set to secure the victory. Bowie State opened up as much as a six point lead at 17-11 before finishing off the set. The Bulldogs hit .526 over the course of the set. The Bowie State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Bowie State took set three to sweep the match. The Bulldogs won the set 25-19. Bowie State took the lead for good at 14-13 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza. The Bowie State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

Looking Ahead
The Bulldogs will have another road test this weekend when Bowie State travels to Buckhannon, WV to compete in non-conference action against the University of Indianapolis and Lock Haven on Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 16, BSU will face West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State at 11;30 a.m. and 2 p.m. All matches will be played at the Rockefeller Center on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan.
