Bulldogs Top Shaw, 79-58 in MLK Unity Invitational

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Bowie State women's basketball team shot 50-percent from three-point range on the way to a 79-58 win against the Shaw Lady Bears at Bon Secours Wellness Arena Saturday during the MLK Unity Invitational.

The Bulldogs (11-6, 5-2 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Robyn Howard added 20 points and Jayla Irvin helped out with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. BSU caught fire in the three-point land, making 11 on 22 attempts. Howard hit six treys for the Bulldogs in the contest, a career-high. 

Defensively, the Bulldogs held Shaw to only 36.2-percent shooting from the field. The Lady Bears finished with six offensive rebounds and managed two second chance points while Bowie State cleared 32 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened
After falling behind 15-13, Bowie State went on a 6-0 run with 3:18 left in the first quarter to take a 19-15 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

BSU built that first quarter lead to 28-21 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 5:22 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Saniha Jackson, to increase its lead to 37-21. The Bulldogs kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 42-26 advantage heading into halftime. Bowie State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Bowie State held on to its advantage and owned a 60-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Bowie State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Harris' three, to grow the lead to 70-49 with 5:36 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 79-58 win. BSU fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 19 points.
