Road Game at Virginia Union Up Next for BSU Women's Basketball

BOWIE, MD -- Bowie State women's basketball meets an old Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe this Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Richmond, Va., for a 5:30 p.m. game against the Virginia Union Lady Panthers. Wednesday's game will be streamed on the CIAA Sports Network.

  • This is the 34th meeting between Bowie State and Virginia Union since the 2008-09 season.

Last Timeout for the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs (11-7, 5-3 CIAA) had two players score double figures last weekend against Lincoln (PA) but could not pick up the win, falling 66-58 at home. Anii Harris led with 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals andJayla Irvin contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs looked efficient in the first half going on a 7-0 run with 9:01 in the first quarter and although the second quarter saw a back and forth battle, BSU maintained a 32-30 lead at the break but LUPA outscored the Bulldogs in both the third and fourth quarter by exact scores of 18-13. The loss was the division opener for Bowie State who stands 0-1 in the Northern Division.

Tracking a Milestone
In just three seasons played wearing the Black and Gold, Harris is just 49 points away from eclipsing a career milestone of scoring 1,000 points. The 5-foot-7 guard has started all 18 games this season for Bowie State and leads the team and the CIAA in scoring (19.8 ppg). The Ellicott City, Md., has a team-best in field goal percentage (45-percent), free throws (63-percent) and steals with an average of 2.6 per game. Harris has had 11 games with at least 20 points scored through 18 games and career-high of 31 points vs. Palm Beach Atlantic back on Dec. 18, 2023.

About Virginia Union  
Virginia Union (12-6, 5-3 CIAA) snapped the Virginia State Trojans six game winning streak with a 70-56 win during the Freedom Classic at the VSU Multipurpose Center Saturday, Jan. 20. VUU had four players score in double digits led by Taniah Johnson with 17 points, followed by Ny Langley with 15, Rori Cox (12) and Kiara Shepherd (10), respectively. The win was the second-straight victory for the Lady Panthers and first division win of the year. The Lady Panthers are fifth in the CIA A in scoring (66.9) and has the leagues top defense, allowing its opponents to just 59 points per game. Additionally, VUU leads the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (35-percent) while holding its opponents to conference best 20-percent. Virginia Union is 7-2 at home this season.
