FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- The Bowie State men's basketball team got a 22-point performance from the bench, but fell 67-59 to the Fayetteville State Broncos (7-7, 2-2 CIAA) on the road Thursday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
The Bulldogs (6-10, 1-4 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Joel Webb, who had 13 points and two steals. Warren Mouganda added 11 points and two steals off the bench and Caleb Johnson chipped in as well with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
The Bowie State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 18 Fayetteville State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Webb's two steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs. However, at the free throw line - Bowie State went to the line just eight times compared to the Broncos who shot 28-of-41 from the charity stripe.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Bowie State went on a 5-0 run with 17:20 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Deven Richmond, to take a 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 32-24.
Fayetteville State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 58-47 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Webb's layup, to shrink the deficit to 58-52 with 4:31 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 67-59. Bowie State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 35 points in the lane.
