FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Bowie State Bulldogs battled through the end but fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos 27-24 on Saturday afternoon at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.
The Broncos improved to 3-2 on the year and 2-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, while the Bulldogs fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference matchups.
Kevin Taylor led Bowie State's passing attack with 200 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and one interception. Curtis Murray totaled 54 yards to lead the Bulldogs' ground attack in the game. while Joseph Towler hauled in four catches for 82 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, Antwain Banks made his presence felt in the passing game, recording four receptions for 53 yards and one touchdown.
Sadiq Salawu showed out for the Bowie State defense, collecting 14 total tackles (11 solo), one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble. Mekhi Williams added three tackles and one recovered fumble for a touchdown and Hasan Mosley had five tackles and one recovered fumble in the loss.
The Bulldogs won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up two times, with BSU turning those takeaways into 14 points.
Defensively, Bowie State did an excellent job restricting the Fayetteville State rushing attack, holding the Broncos to 5 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, the BSU rushing attack out-gained FSU 61-5.
How It Happened
Bowie State took a 3-0 lead over Fayetteville State after scoring the game's first points with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter. The Broncos then scored to take a 14-3 lead before the Bulldogs put a touchdown on the board to narrow the advantage and make it a 14-10 game.
FSU extended its lead to 24-17 before BSU put a touchdown on the board with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter to tie it up at 24-24. Bowie State went scoreless while Fayetteville State added three points to finish off the scoring in the final second of regulation.
