Women's Basketball Offically Opens Season at Californa (PA) Tuesday

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team will travel to California, Pa., to face the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Nov. 12 with a tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m. from the Convocation Center.

The Series
  • This is the fifth meeting between the two programs since 2011. 
  • Bowie State is 1-1 at home versus the Vulcans. 
  • Vulcans holds a 3-1 record in the last four matchups; however the Bulldogs won the last outing (74-61) on Nov.27, 2023.

About Bowie State
The Bulldogs finished the 2023-24 season with a 13-14 record and 7-9 mark against league opponents under the leadership of head coach Shadae Swan whom will be entering her 10th season at the helm. Bowie State six players from last year's roster including Mia Smith whom will look to carry most of the load offensively, the Clarksburg, Md., native averaged 7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 40-percent from the field. 

BSU adds 10 players to this year's roster including a pair of transfer highlighted by Destiny Ryles who posted 16.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.4 steals per game and led the Firebirds to their first ECC Tournament semi-final appearance since 2016 last season. She led the conference in steals and assists and was second in points per game. She ranked fifth in the nation in assists and 6th in steals and was also one of 12 players in the country to record a triple-double this season. Ryles was a 4X ECC Player of the Week honoree and earned seven Honor Roll spots during 2023-24. Ryles was named to the ECC First-Team for the second consecutive year and also hit both her 1,000th career point and 500th career rebound last season. 

Last Whistle
In the Bulldogs exhibition at Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Ryles led BSU with 11 points, but it was not enough as the Bowie State women's basketball team fell short to the Hawks (1-1) 43-41 on the road. Smith chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds and Mayah Garner contributed with five points.

The Bulldogs held the Hawks to only 36.4-percent shooting from the field. Bowie State trailed 21-16 heading into halftime,however, could not overcome Maryland-Eastern Shore defensive effort as BSU was held to 34.2 percent on the evening. The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks 12-11 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth quarter, only having six turnovers but could not rally in the exhibition. 

About California (PA)
California University of Pennsylvania are apart of the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) entering Tuesday's non-conference action. The Lady Vulcans (2-0) are coming off an 81-56 win to Wheeling. Alicia Young led all scorers with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Nina Shaw chipped in 16 points, four assist, and four rebounds, while Allycia Harris helped with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three assist. CAL (PA) racked up 40 points in the paint and forced 22 turnovers, which led to 18 points Saturday evening. Last season, California (PA) went 23-9 overall and 16-6 in the PSAC. CAL (PA) fell to Lock Haven (74-60) during the first round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament. The 2024-2025 Vulcans roster is composed of four true freshmen. California (PA) were selected to finish second in the PSAC West Pre-Season Poll. 

CAL (PA) is averaging 88 points, 41.0 rebounds and 28assists through two games this season. Young is the leading scorer, averaging 19.5 per game and shooting percent of 53- percent. Defensively, the Vulcans are led by Allyci Harris who averages 7.5 rebounds, while Young leads the team in steals with six, respectively. 

Next Up
Bowie State will continue its road stand when the Bulldogs travel to Norfolk, Va., on Friday, Nov. 15 for a 6 p.m. road game against Old Dominion.
