Women's Hoops Extends Home Stretch Against Shepherd

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's basketball team will host the Shepherd University Rams at home for on Wednesday, Nov. 27, in a non-conference tilt. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. inside the A.C. Jordan Arena and will be the first tilt of the doubleheader on the evening.

The game will air live on the Bulldog Sports Network.

Clear Bag Policy
Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium all of which are subject to search.
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap
• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to: purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium. 

The Series  

  • This is the sixth meeting between the two programs since 2011. 

  • Bowie State owns a 2-0 record at home and a 1-2 record on the road against Shepherd. 

  • The Bulldogs hold a 3-2 record over Shepherd, as BSU won its last outing (65-61) on Nov. 21, 2023. 

Last Whistle 
The Bulldogs (3-2) won its last outing against Felician University, 70-61 at home this past Monday for its Education Day. Mia Smith led the charge for the Bulldogs finishing with 17 points, three steals, and two blocks. Shelby Ricks added 12 points and four assist, while Destiny Ryles contributed with nine points, five assist, and five rebounds. Additionally, Beulah Odiong  was everywhere on the court tallying eight points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Bowie State bench outscored the Golden Falcons 17-10, with Gabrielle Clary leading with seven points off the bench. BSU, dominated in transition, scoring 22 fast-break points compared to FEL's 9. The Bulldogs tallied 14 steals, with Smith, Ryles, and Odiong each contributing with three each. To add on, BSU out-rebounded Felician 42-37, gaining a five-rebound advantage and forced 26 turnovers in the win this past Monday. 

Bowie State is averaging 66.6 points per game, 41.8 rebounds, 10.4 assists, 10 steals, and 3.8 blocks per game this season. Through five games, BSU leaders are  Ryles leading the team in the following: averaging 20.8 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. Ryles ranks first in the conference averaging 19.2 points per game. Defensively,  Odiong commands averaging 7.4 rebounds, while Smith averages 1.6 blocks per game. 
 
About Shepherd   
Shepherd University, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division, enters Wednesday 2-4, following a loss against foe the California (Pa.), 70-52 on the road this past Saturday. Carmaya Bowman led the Rams with a season-high 10 points and eight rebounds, while Annie Hunt recorded eight points and two rebounds. To add on, Kara Wehner adding on seven points, eight rebounds, and four assist in the loss.

This is Head Coach Julie Kaufman third season with Shepherd, as the Rams went 6-21 overall and 4-18 in the conference in the 2023-24 season. The 2024-2025 roster has six returners and nine newcomers.The Rams were selected to finish ninth in the PSAC East Preseason Poll. 

Shepherd is averaging 65.8 points, 39.3 rebounds, 11.8 assists, and 7.5 steals through six games this season. Wehner leads the team, averaging 10.5 points, and 3.0 assist per game. Defensively, Browman leads the team in rebounds averaging 5.7 per game, while Samiyah Nasir commands, averaging 1.8 steals per game.Additionally, Lamaria Estridge controls, averaging 0.6 blocks per game, respectively. 
 
Looking Ahead 
Looking Ahead Bowie State will travel to Charlotte, NC to face Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opponent Johnson C. Smith University for their Education Day, Monday,  Dec.2nd. at 11:00 p.m. on the road inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
