Women's Basketball Heads South for CIAA Clash Against Winston-Salem

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's basketball team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 to face the Rams of Winston-Salem State for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest. Game time is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in the C.E. Gaines Center.

The Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0 CIAA,) are currently on a seven-game winning streak after defeating Wilmington University on Monday evening 102-67. The Bulldogs were led by Destiny Ryles who recorded her first triple-double of the season posting 13 points, 10 assists, and 11 steals. Mia Smith contributed with 22 points and three steals, while Sydney Anthony helped out with 12 points and four steals from the bench.

Bowie State scored a season-high 53 points from the bench, outscoring the Wildcats with only 13 points from the reserves.The Bulldogs showcased excellent ball movement, tallying 22 assists. BSU dominated inside, scoring 42 points in the paint compared to WILMU's 18. The Bulldogs recorded a season-high 29 steals in the win.

Bowie State excels at swiping the ball from their opponents, turning steals into fast break points with ease. Pickpocket machine Ryles leads the Bulldogs in steals with 4.5 per game, recording Bulldogs history with a season-high 11 steals in the win against Wilmington. Ryles leads the conference in steals with 45 on the season. Steal artist Smith recorded a season-high three steals in the win this past Monday, as she averages 1.8 steals per outing. Smith has 18 steals throughout 10 games and is ranked second on the team. Defensive swiper Beulah Odiong has racked up seven steals in the last two games, recording her season-high four steals against the number one ranked defense Claflin. Odiong averages 1.7 steals per game and is placed third on the roster for steals. The Bulldogs have recorded 10 or more steals in six games this season, averaging 12.7 steals per outing with a total of 127. Bowie State ranks fifth in the league for both steals and defense performance.
 
About Winston-Salem
WSSU enters Tuesday's match (2-6, 0-1 CIAA) lost their meeting against CIAA foe Virginia Union University this past Thursday 70-53 at home for Education Day. La'Niya Simes led the Rams with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Alana Biosse and Karina Scott recorded seven points off the bench. Winston-Salem State outscored the Virginia Union bench 25-20 in the loss.

This is head coach L'tona Lamonte's 11th season with WSSU, as the Rams went 9-21 overall and 2-16 in the conference during the 2023-24 season. The 2024-2025 roster has five returning players and nine newcomers. The Rams were selected to finish 10th in the CIAA Preseason All-Conference Team. Jakiya Mack was selected for the 2024-25 CIAA frontcourt in the league.

WSSU is averaging 60.0 points, 37.9 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and 9.8 steals through eight games this season. Christiana McLean leads the team, averaging 12.0 points per game, while Jakaiya Mack averages 1.3 assists per outing. Defensively, Simes leads the team in rebounds averaging 7.6 per game, while Biosse commands with 2.0 steals per outing. Chole Williams owns 0.8 blocks per game. Winston-Salem ranks fifth in team offensive rebounds with 15.1 rebounds per outing, respectively.
