Bulldogs Sweep Bluefield State Saturday Afternoon

BOWIE, MD --The Bulldogs sweep their Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) doubleheader against Bluefield State winning 12-4 and 6-2 Saturday afternoon Apr. 20 at BSU Softball Field in Bowie, MD.

GAME 1 | Bowie State 12, Bluefield State 4
Ellianna Henneberg and Lindsey George each collected three RBIs to help propel the Bulldogs (13-21, 7-5) past Big Blue (12-22, 7-6) 12-4 on Saturday.

Akirra Pullen (7-10) got the win for Bowie State (13-21, 7-5). The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.

George went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles in addition to her three RBIs and Henneberg put together a 2-for-3 day with a double and a walk, supplementing her three RBI performance for the Bulldogs. Presleigh Braxton compiled a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless. BSU scored twice, with one run coming across on Pullen's single.

The Bulldogs then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Big Blues cut it to 2-1. The BSU offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of George, which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.

BSU kept Bluefield State without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Bulldogs picked up two runs when a single from Sydney Edmond which scored Ryan Fraser and Jahkya Watkins.

The Big Blues gained ground, closing the gap to 8-4 until BSU added some insurance in the sixth. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Henneberg, bringing the score to 12-4 in favor of BSU. The score remained 12-4 for the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES
» The Bulldogs' power output was led by George, who picked up two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» BSU's highest-scoring inning was the sixth when it pushed four runs across.
» BSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» Five Bulldogs had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Big Blues at a 14-9 clip.
» The Bulldogs stole six bases as a team.
» BSU went 7-for-14 (.500) with runners in scoring position.
» BSU pitchers faced 29 Bluefield State hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out three.

GAME 2 | Bowie State 6, Bluefield State 2
George collected three extra-base hits to help power the Bulldogs (14-21, 8-5) past Big Blue (12-23, 7-7) 6-2 on Saturday.

George (6-8) started in the circle and picked up the win for BSU. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.

George's three extra-base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-3 day and included a double, two triples, and an RBI. Saniya Jones put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Edmond also contributed for the Bulldogs, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. BSU's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Edmond. Bluefield State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still coasted to the 6-2 win.

The Bulldogs will welcome Elizabeth City State on Sunday, Apr. 21 at 12 p.m. for their home finales and senior day at the BSU softball field. The Bulldogs will be honoring seven seniors on the day.
