No. 4 Bowie State to Meet No. 1 Shaw in Women’s Tennis CIAA Quarterfinal Friday

ETTRICK, VA --- The No. 4 seeded Bowie State women's tennis team will travel to Ettrick, Va and compete in the first round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship (CIAA) against No. 1 Shaw on Friday, Apr. 26. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. from the campus of Virginia State inside the VSU Tennis Complex.

  • This is the 19th matchup between the Bulldogs and Lady Bears since 2009.

About the Bulldogs 
The Bulldogs (5-9, 5-7 CIAA) finished the regular season with a 4-3 victory against Bluefield State on Monday. BSU has been led by Afruica Gentle who had finished the regular season with a 9-2 record in singles position No. 2 this season. Against conference opponents, Gentle produced a record of 8-1 with her lone loss versus Bluefield State. The Bulldogs top duo in doubles is Gentle and partner Abner Dickson who both have combined for a 10-3 record and 8-1 mark in the CIAA this season. 
 
About the Lady Bears 
The Lady Bears (15-4, 9-0 CIAA) finish the regular season with a 4-0 win against JCSU on Monday. Shaw is 6-1 at home and 4-3 on the road this season. The Lady Bears have not lost a conference matchup since the 2019-20 season in which the season was halted due to COVID-19. At neutral sites this season, SU has a 5-0 record. In total, the Lady Bears have won 12 CIAA championships entering this year's conference tournament and in the last 10 years, Shaw has won eight of the last 10.

The winner of the quarterfinal round between Shaw and Bowie State will move on to the semifinal against the winner of No. 2 Virginia State and No. 3 Winston-Salem State on Saturday, Apr. 27 at 11 a.m.
