Softball to Open Division Play this Weekend in Virginia

BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State softball team will travel to Virginia for Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) doubleheaders against Virginia Union University on Saturday, Apr. 6 at 1 p.m., and Virginia State University on Sunday, Apr. 7 at 2 p.m. Both twinbills will serve as division contests for the Bulldogs.

The Series vs Virginia Union 

  • The Bulldogs are currently on a five-game win streak against the Lady Panthers 

  • VUU is 2-8 in the last 10 games against BSU entering Saturday's twin-bill  

  • The Bulldogs longest winning streak against the Panthers is nine games.

  • BSU is 18-14 all-time against VSU

Last Time Out 
The Bulldogs (10-17, 5-1 CIAA) head to Virginia after a great showing in the CIAA Round-Up going 5-1 on Mar. 25-27 in Elizabeth City, N.C. BSU dominated on day two of the Round-Up, pitching two shutouts against Livingstone 15-0, and Shaw 5-0. The three-person relay of Akirra Pullen, Taylor Dawkins, and Karen Fritzges combined for only allowing one hit over five innings. Lindsey George tallied three hits with one being a homerun and four RBIs over the two games.  

Jayla Hill leads the team with a batting clip of .397, followed by Coreena Dunham (.313) and Sydney Edmond (.301). In the circle, Pullen (4-9) has an ERA of 3.47 with 43 strikeouts through 70.2 innings pitched. George (5-7) has started nine games with an ERA of 3.70 with 37 strikeouts through 58.2 innings.  

About Virginia State    
The Trojans (11-2, 6-0 CIAA) finished the CIAA Round-Up by going perfect winning all six matchups in Elizabeth City. A key win was on day one of the round-up when VSU scored a season-high 22 runs against Johnson C. Smith on Mar. 25. Hailey Darrington went perfect on the day going 4-4, scoring five runs with two RBIs. Maise Spivey also went perfect going 4-4 with one RBI on the day. 

In the circle, Alaijah Pratt (3-0) has an ERA of 1.85 with 12 strikeouts through 22.2 innings pitched followed by Jaya Diggs-Hagwood (2-0) with an ERA of 2.25 with 12 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched.  

About Virginia Union   
The Lady Panthers (4-14, 4-2 CIAA) enter Saturday's matchup after going 4-2 in the CIAA Round-Up. During cross division play, VUU shut out Livingstone, 8-0. Skylar Rosenbalm picked up the win after pitching five shutout innings allowing two hits, with five strikeouts. Offensively, Shyra Jones went 2-3 on the day with three RBIs and scoring one run.  

In the circle, Rosenbalm (2-4) has an ERA of 8.19 with 11 strikeouts through 19.2 innings pitched followed by Jayanna Richards (1-4) with an ERA of 8.22 with 19 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched.

The Bulldogs will travel to Buckhannon, WV for a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday, Apr. 6 at 2 p.m.
