BOWIE, MD --- On Wednesday, May 8, the Bowie State women's basketball team hosted a Special Olympics basketball clinic in conjunction with Special Olympics Maryland Prince George's County inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The students who attended were from Bowie and Central High Schools in Prince George's County. The clinic focused on basketball instructions such as following directions, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, defense, agility, and passing along with sportsmanship and teamwork led by the Bulldogs women's basketball student-athletes. Each student had an opportunity to incorporate skills learned into a 5-on-5 game to close out the day.
"I am very appreciative for Ms. Patricia Miles and Mr. Scott Geist, for trusting our program to provide these incredible students with an amazing experience," said head women's basketball coach
Shadae Swan. "Our main goal was to ensure that everyone had fun and from the smiles on everyone's faces, I am sure we achieved our goal. The students were engaged and enthused throughout the clinic. I admire our team for their dedication to make sure that everything went smoothly while encouraging the participants and building their confidence. We are looking forward to hosting again next year."
Special Olympics serves individuals with intellectual disabilities, which may be accompanied by a physical disability. A physical disability on its own would not qualify someone for participation with Special Olympics. The event celebrates the impact of athletics and student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community.
