The Series
Saturday's game will be the 34th meeting between Livingstone and Bowie State, dating back to 1973. The Blue Bears own the all-time series, 19-14, but the Bulldogs have won three out of the last five meetings. In the previous meeting on Sept. 30, 2023, BSU fell 31-18 in Salisbury, N.C. Livingstone never relinquished the lead throughout the game after taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs responded at the beginning of the second quarter, but the Blue Bears led 17-6 at halftime The Bulldogs kept fighting scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but ultimately it was not enough falling 31-18.
Last Time Out
The Bulldogs are still in search of their first win on the 2024 season after falling short to the Davenport Panthers in non-conference action last weekend. Davenport jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a field goal to close out the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown in the second quarter but ultimately were outscored by the Panthers after they took a 17-7 lead heading into halftime. After an uneventful third quarter, BSU closed the margin to 17-14 to close out the matchup.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Taylor excelled in his first career start, tallying 18 completions for 200 passing yards and two touchdowns on the day. Redshirt junior Joshua Thurston led the ground attack with 40 rushing yards on seven attempts. Redshirt sophomore Antwain Banks led the Bowie State receivers with 65 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs were led defensively by redshirt junior Jordan Williams who racked up six tackles and one tackle for loss. Redshirt senior Shawan Lewis picked up BSU's only sack to go along with two tackles for loss.
Back to Our Game
After starting the season 0-2, Bowie State is looking to get back to their brand of football. In the previous game, the Bulldogs managed to hold Davenport to no points in the second half but did not cause any takeaways. With the team entering CIAA play and BSU ranking second in interceptions last season, the defense will be looking to create havoc in the backfield causing the Livingstone to utilize the passing game more than the previous week.
When asked about the defensive mindset, Head Coach Kyle Jackson said, "When you take the ball away, it changes the whole game. It puts the offense in a great position and takes away the opportunity for the other team to score."
Scouting Livingstone
The Livingstone Blue Bears had a close matchup against the Allen University (S.C.) Yellow Jackets, winning 23-21 on Sept. 14 in Salsbury, N.C. This was a back-and-forth matchup this game featured four lead changes. In the fourth quarter, Allen took a 21-20 lead after a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Blue Bears responded by driving down the field and kicking a game-winning field goal with 3:18 left on the clock. LC stopped the Yellow Jackets' following driving to end the game. Sophomore Brenton Hilton led the Blue Bears' passing game with six completions for 61 yards and one touchdown. Mohamed Nyanamukenga dominated on the ground with 138 rushing yards on 24 attempts.
