Bowie State Continues CIAA Play Against Winston-Salem State

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0 CIAA) will face off against the Winston-Salem State Rams(3-1, 1-0 CIAA) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) matchup on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Bowman Gray Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will air live on the CIAA Sports Network

The Series 
Saturday's game will be the 24th meeting between Winston-Salem State and Bowie State, dating back to 1983. The Rams own the all-time series, 15-8, but the Bulldogs have won three out of the last five meetings. In the previous outing on Oct. 5, 2019, BSU won 23-13 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Rams jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. The Bulldogs narrowed the lead to 13-9 to end the first half. BSU's defense did not allow a second-half score, allowing the offense to take the lead at the end of the third quarter, 16-13. The Bulldogs added one more touchdown to end the game off 23-13. 

CIAA Rookie of the Week 
Bowie State's Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Taylor has been named the CIAA Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. Taylor played a big role in the Bulldogs' 31-17 win over Livingstone on Saturday, the Bulldogs' first win of the 2024 season and first conference win on the campaign. The Waldorf, Md., native led BSU's passing attack with 145 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and one interception. The signal caller also added 47 yards and one touchdown on the ground in the Bulldogs' victory over the Blue Bears.

The freshman quarterback has improved each game this season, tacking 437 passing yards on 39-72 pass completions and five TDs.

Last Time Out 
The Bulldogs won their first game of the 2024 season after defeating Livingstone 31-17 on Saturday, Sept. 28th. BSU started off strong, leading 10-0 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs answered again with a touchdown, ending the first half with a 17-0 lead. Livingstone gained momentum in the third after two touchdowns with the score being 17-14 going into the fourth. The Blue Bears managed to tie the game up at 17-17 but the Bulldogs added two more touchdowns before time expired winning 31-17.

Rookie of the Week Taylor led BSU to their first victory with 13 completions for 145 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Sophomore Micah Robinson led the Bulldogs rushing attack, gaining 71 yards on 12 attempts. Redshirt freshman Joseph Towler was the leading receiver for the Bulldogs with four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. BSU's defense was headlined by senior Mekhi Williams, who tallied eight tackles, one tackle for loss, and two interceptions on the day. Redshirt senior Shawan Lewis anchored the defensive line picking up six tackles and two tackles for loss.

Scouting Winston-Salem State
The Rams won a nail-bitter in their last matchup against Virginia State, 15-14, on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Petersburg, VA. After a scoreless first quarter, WSSU struck first after a field goal, but VSU responded, taking the lead 7-3 at halftime. The Rams held the Trojans scoreless in the third quarter while adding another field goal, ending the quarter with a score of 7-6. VSU answered back by scoring a touchdown, making the score 14-6. The Rams then scored on a 78-yard touchdown run. The defense shut down VSU's last drive setting up a game-winning field goal as time expired for the WSSU win. Sophomore Daylin Lee led the Rams' passing attack with 12 completions for 115 yards and one interception. Junior Trevon Hester led the ground game with 148 yards on 28 attempts.
