Women's Hoops Travels to Lincoln (PA) Saturday in CIAA Showdown

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's basketball team hits the road to face Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe Lincoln (PA) Lions on Saturday, Jan.18 in a division showdown. Game time is set to start at 2:00 p.m. inside Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia, PA.

The Series

  • This will be the 25th time the two programs have met since 2009. 
  • Bowie State is 5-7 at home and 3-9 on the road against the Lady Lions.
  • The Lions own a 16-8 record over BSU, while the Bulldogs lost their last outing against LUPA on the road inside Manuel Rivero Hall 64-54 on Feb.24, 2024.

Last Timeout for the Bulldogs 
The Bulldogs (11-5, 5-1 CIAA,) snapped a three-game losing skid against CIAA foe Shaw University at home Thursday afternoon 56-47. Mayah Garner led the charge recording her first career double-double 15 points and 16 rebounds. Destiny Ryles tailed 11 points, six rebounds and three steals and Ayasha Thomas contributed with 11 points and four steals off the bench.

Bowie State recorded 11 fast break points, compared to Shaw's four. The Bulldogs tallied 10 steals, gaining a five-point advantage over the Lady Bears in the win.

Through 16 games these players have been consistent leaders. Ryles leads the team in the following: 18.6 points per game, 4.4 steals per outing, and 3.9 assists per game. Ryles leads the conference in steals. Beulah Odiong is the team's rebounder averaging 7.7 per outing. Odiong has recorded 123 rebounds on the season. Kristin Sterling controls with 0.8 blocks per game, recording a block in nine games this season. Bowie State is ranked sixth in the conference for both offense and defense.  
 
About Lincoln University 
LUPA enters Saturday's match (7-8, 4-2 CIAA) won their last meeting against CIAA foe Fayetteville State University 79-73 at home on Jan.7. Anyssa Fields led the Lady Lions with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Ciani Montgomery contributed with 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Additionally, Kaziah Akinniyi recorded 10 points and five rebounds. The Lady Lions shot 81 percent from the free throw line connecting on 13-16 attempts, in the win. 

This is head coach Janice Washington's fourth season with LUPA, as the Lady Lions went 11-15 overall and 7-10 in the conference during the 2023-24 season. The Lady Lions were selected to finish 8th in the CIAA Preseason All-Conference Team. 

LUPA is averaging 62.7 points, 40.6 rebounds, 12.3 assists, and 10.6 steals through 15 games this season. Montgomery leads the team averaging 13.2 points per game and leads the team in assists 2.8 per outing. Defensively, Maya Madison Walker leads the team in rebounds averaging 8.0 per game while Fields controls with 0.6 blocks per outing. Jaleesa Lanier averages 2.5 steals per game. Lincoln positions first in free throw percentage and third in offensive rebounds in the league, respectively.
