BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State University volleyball team (9-14, 6-5 CIAA) split its matchups on the final day of the CIAA Round-Up hosted inside A.C. Jordan Arena on Sunday, falling to Winston-Salem State University in the morning match before bouncing back with a dominant sweep of Johnson C. Smith University in the afternoon.
GAME ONE | Winston-Salem State 3, Bowie State 0
In the morning match, Bowie State opened strong behind key kills from
Nina Edwards, battling to keep pace with the Lady Rams early. Edwards was a standout offensively, finishing with 13 kills on 22 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage. Despite multiple lead changes in the first two sets, unforced errors proved costly for the Bulldogs as WSSU capitalized late to secure each frame.
The third set saw BSU struggle to regain momentum despite contributions from
Nadira Avery,
Iman Wright, and
Melisa Anacius, as the Lady Rams maintained control to complete the sweep.
Taylor Johnson anchored the defense with 14 digs, while
Mekenna Scott tallied 13 assists.
GAME TWO | Bowie State 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
Bowie State flipped the script in the afternoon match, coming out strong against Johnson C. Smith. The Bulldogs built early momentum behind sharp serving and disciplined play at the net. Edwards again led the way with six kills and three blocks, while Anacius added three solo blocks and a perfect hitting line (2-for-2) to pace the front line.
Trinity Loundmon distributed the offense effectively, finishing with eight assists, five digs, and two service aces. Gross chipped in three aces and solid defensive work in the back row.
After edging out a tight first set, BSU took full control in the second and third frames, holding JCSU under 15 points in each. The Bulldogs' strong service game featuring aces from
Kimiko Evans,
Haley Pelham, and
Corey Bradley helped seal the sweep and cap a solid showing at the Round-Up.
Bowie State improved to 6-5 in CIAA play heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Bulldogs will look to carry their momentum forward as conference play continues next week.
