WILMINGTON, DE – The Bowie State volleyball team (10-14) delivered a dominant performance Friday night, earning a straight-set sweep over Goldey-Beacom (11-11) inside the Jones Center. The Bulldogs controlled the match from start to finish, claiming set victories of 25-20, 28-26, and 25-23 while posting an impressive 14 total blocks defensively.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening frame, jumping to a 3-0 lead behind two consecutive service aces from
Mekenna Scott and early attack errors by the Lightning. Key plays from
Nina Edwards and a combined block by
Abena Asomani-Martin and
Nadira Avery kept the Bulldogs in front.
Lyric Snowden added a service ace as Bowie State extended its lead to 18-12, and the Bulldogs sealed the set 25-20 thanks to a crucial block from Avery and
Madyson Brinson.
In the second set, Bowie State battled back from an early deficit to even the score at 7-7. A block from Avery and key kills by Edwards and
Nicole Taylor helped shift momentum in BSU's favor. Despite a late surge from Goldey-Beacom, Bowie State's defense anchored by Snowden's front-row presence proved too strong. The Bulldogs closed the set on back-to-back Lightning errors to edge out a thrilling 28-26 win.
The third set saw the Bulldogs rally once again after an early GBC lead. Edwards sparked the comeback with a kill assisted by Scott, while
Taylor Johnson and
Haley Pelham combined for three consecutive service aces to push BSU ahead 8-6. Snowden and
Melisa Anacius made key contributions down the stretch, and Taylor sealed the match with decisive kills, giving Bowie State the 25-23 victory and the sweep.
