RICHMOND, VA – The Bowie State women's volleyball team (6-12, 3-3 CIAA) came up just short in a five-set battle against Virginia Union (8-8, 3-3 CIAA) Thursday night inside Barco-Stevens Hall.
Bowie State opened the match strong, taking the first set 25-19 behind efficient hitting and strong defensive play.
Lyric Snowden and
Nicole Taylor led the charge at the net, while
Mekenna Scott set the tone with crisp passing as the Bulldogs grabbed early momentum.
In the second set, the Panthers and Bulldogs traded points in a back-and-forth battle that featured 10 ties. Despite a late push from BSU, Virginia Union capitalized on a few key errors to edge out a 26-24 win and even the match at one set apiece.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the third, using timely kills from
Iman Wright and
Nadira Avery to take a 25-22 win. Bowie State's back-row defense, anchored by
Taylor Johnson, limited VUU's attack as the Bulldogs regained the 2-1 advantage.
Virginia Union answered in the fourth set, pulling away late to earn a 25-20 victory that forced a decisive fifth frame. The final set remained close early, but the Panthers finished on a 6-2 run to close out the match, 15-11.
