BOWIE, MD – Bowie State University freshman quarterback Savion Witherspoon has been named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Witherspoon, a true freshman, turned in an exceptional performance during the Bulldogs' Homecoming matchup against Elizabeth City State on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Baltimore, Md. native showcased his dual-threat talent by rushing for three touchdowns and totaling 220 yards of offense in the narrow 28-27 setback.

He concluded the contest completing 16-of-27 passes for 139 yards while adding 81 rushing yards on 12 carries, including touchdown runs of five, seven, and two yards. Witherspoon directed a balanced BSU offense that recorded 317 total yards and 27 first downs.

Witherspoon's breakout effort marks his first CIAA weekly honor of the season and adds to Bowie State's growing list of weekly award recipients this fall.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they travel to face Lincoln (PA) in their regular-season finale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at LU Athletics Stadium.
