Bowie State Set to Clash with Virginia State in Open Round of the CIAA Tournament

BOWIE, MD— The No. 5 Bowie State men's basketball team will take on North No. 1 Virginia State during the opening round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:40 p.m. inside the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Md. 

 

This matchup will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+ (https://plus.espn.com/), with the championship game also being shown on ESPNU.

The Series
• The Trojans have won four of the last five meetings against the Bulldogs, entering this 
quarterfinal round matchup. 
• In their last meeting, Virginia State defeated Bowie State, 77-70, inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Md., earlier this season. 
• BSU lost their only neutral site matchup against VSU 81-70 in the CIAA Tournament on Feb. 26, 2016.

is year's CIAA Tournament against Livingstone College, 68-64, inside CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Md. Elijah Davis led the team in scoring with 27 points and three assists. All-CIAA Frontcourt member Amare Wimbush scored in double figures with 14 points and five rebounds. BSU did not allow a three-point make as LC shot 0-10 from behind the arc. Bowie State also scored 20 fastbreak points, while Livingstone scored 14 points in transition.

 

Scouting Virginia State   
North No. 1 Virginia State (18-8, 13-3 CIAA, 7-3 North) enters the 
quarterfinal round of the CIAA Tournament on a five-game winning streak. The Trojans are the fourth-best offense and rebounding team in CIAA, averaging 77.2 ppg and grabbing 36.6 rebounds. All-CIAA Backcourt member Jacob Cooper leads the conference in assists per game with 6.3 while leading VSU in points with 14.5 ppg. Clint Wright Jr. is second on the team in scoring averaging 12 ppg.

The winner between Bowie State and Virginia State will face the winner of Claflin and Lincoln (PA)/Winston-Salem State on Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.
