Bulldogs Open CIAA Round-Up with Three Wins

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State softball team (9-13, 3-0 CIAA) delivered an impressive performance on Friday, Mar. 21, securing victories against Claflin, Fayetteville State, and Winston-Salem State at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at Walnut Creek Athletic Complex.

Game One: Bowie State 8, Claflin 7
Sophomore Taylor Dawkins led the Bulldogs offensively, going 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Senior Lindsey George contributed with a 1-for-2 performance, adding a walk and an RBI, while junior Coreena Dunham went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Trailing 1-0, Bowie State tied the game in the third inning when George's RBI single brought home senior Jayla Hill from second base. The game was halted at the top of the fifth and postponed to Friday, Mar. 20, at noon.

When play resumed, Claflin had two runners in scoring position with two outs and capitalized with two runs to reclaim the lead. Bowie State responded in the bottom of the inning, as sophomore Presleigh Braxton crossed the plate to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Lady Panthers extended their lead to 4-2, but the Bulldogs fought back in the seventh, tying the game at 4-4 on Dawkins' two-run homer. Claflin regained the lead in the eighth, but Bowie State once again responded, evening the score at 7-7.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth when senior Sydney Edmond scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Santanna Puller, securing a thrilling 8-7 walk-off victory for the Bulldogs.

Game Two: Bowie State 13, Fayetteville State 0
Bowie State dominated in the second game, powered by Hill's stellar performance at the plate. She went 2-for-2 with two home runs, a walk, and three RBIs. Dawkins followed with a 2-for-3 outing, recording a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Dunham also delivered, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

The Bulldogs took control early, with Hill's two-run homer in the first inning giving them a 2-0 lead. They continued to build momentum, scoring in the second, third, and fourth innings. Their biggest offensive bursts came in the second and fourth, plating five runs in each frame. Dawkins punctuated the fourth inning with a two-run homer.

BSU tallied four home runs in just five innings, with Hill, Dawkins, and Ariana Ellerson all hitting balls out of the park.

Game Three: Bowie State 9, Winston-Salem State 3
Bowie State completed the weekend sweep with a decisive 9-3 victory over Winston-Salem State. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Bulldogs responded with two runs, aided by a Rams error.

BSU extended its lead in the third inning, scoring six runs, highlighted by a three-run double from Seals to make it 8-1. Winston-Salem closed the gap to 8-3, but Bowie State added an insurance run in the fifth to seal the 9-3 win.

With the three victories, Bowie State continues to build momentum as they prepare for their next matchup.

The Bulldogs will look to extend their winning streak in conference play as they take on Livingstone at 11 a.m. and Shaw at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 22, at the Walnut Creek Athletic Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
