BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State softball team (11-14, 5-0 CIAA) returns home to begin division play on Friday, Mar. 28 against Virginia State University (6-9, 4-1 CIAA). The Bulldogs will play a doubleheader with games slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the BSU Softball Field.

Bulldogs Last Timeout
The Bowie State softball team took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning but couldn't hold on, falling 4-2 to Hampton on Tuesday, Mar. 25, at Pirates Softball Stadium.
Freshman Sydney Seals came out of the bullpen and took the loss, while senior Lindsey George delivered a strong start, pitching four innings and allowing just one run on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, senior Jayla Hill led the Bulldogs, going 1-for-3 with an RBI, while George added a 1-for-2 performance with a double.
Bowie State tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when sophomore Taylor Dawkins scored, then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Hill's RBI single. However, Hampton responded with three runs over the final two innings to secure the win.
About Bowie State
The Bulldogs has had a competitive start to the 2025 season, posting an 11-14 record while hitting .252 as a team. Junior Coreena Dunham leads the offensive effort with a .373 average, 25 hits, and 15 RBIs, while Hill provides power, batting .356 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. Sophomore Presleigh Braxton has also been a key contributor, hitting .303 with 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
Defensively, Dunham has been a standout with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, while sophomore Ariana Ellerson and George provide stability in the infield, posting .980 and .979 fielding percentages, respectively. In the circle, sophomore Ryalee Dillard has been the most reliable pitcher, holding a 6-1 record with a 3.27 ERA over 45.0 innings, striking out 33 while limiting opponents to a .266 batting average.
Trojans Last Outing
Virginia State dominated Livingstone with an 8-0 shutout, controlling the game from start to finish in the CIAA Round-Up in Raleigh last weekend. Lauren Parham and Mylia Knight sparked the scoring in the first inning, and a five-run second inning, led by Alaijah Pratt, Reina Washington, Maisie Goodwin, and Hailey Darrington, put Virginia State up 6-0.
Livingstone had few chances but couldn't capitalize against the Trojans solid defense. Two more runs in the fourth sealed the victory, as Virginia State's relentless offense, strong pitching, and airtight defense secured the commanding win.
Scouting Virginia State
Virginia State has had an up-and-down start to the 2025 season, posting a 6-9 record while hitting .312 as a team. Darrington leads the offensive effort with a .457 average, 16 hits, and a .600 slugging percentage. Pratt has been productive with a .370 average, 17 hits, and three stolen bases, while Parham provides additional speed, batting .362 with eight stolen bases and five RBIs.
Defensively, Parham and Darrington have been reliable presences, both holding a 1.000 fielding percentage, while Mylia Knight anchors the infield with a .979 mark. In the circle, Pratt has been the most consistent arm, holding a 4-3 record with a 5.05 ERA over 43.0 innings, striking out 20 while limiting opponents to a .339 batting average.
