BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State softball team (13-14, 7-0 CIAA, 2-0 North) jumped out to an early lead in game one doubleheader and never looked back, defeating Virginia State (6-11, 4-3 CIAA, 0-2 North) 7-3 before cruising to a 10-1 victory in Game 2 on Friday, Mar. 28 at the BSU Softball Field.
Game One - Bowie State 7, Virginia State 3
Senior Lindsey George secured the win for Bowie State, pitching five innings while allowing three earned runs on eight hits. The right-hander issued four walks and struck out five.
The Bulldogs quickly responded after falling behind 1-0, plating two runs in the first inning. One of those came on a single by George.
Virginia State remained scoreless as Bowie State extended its lead in the third. Sophomore Presleigh Braxton crossed the plate, making it 3-1. The Bulldogs then broke the game open in the fourth, adding four more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from junior Coreena Dunham - her fourth of the season, pushing the lead to 7-1.
Though Virginia State managed to score twice late in the game, Bowie State remained in control and secured a 7-3 victory.
Game Two - Bowie State 10, Virginia State 1
Sophomore Ryalee Dillard earned the win for Bowie State, pitching five innings while allowing just one run on five hits. The right-hander issued three walks and struck out five.
After falling behind 1-0, the Bulldogs quickly responded in the first inning. Sophomore Taylor Dawkins delivered an RBI single, scoring Braxton from second base to even the game. The score remained tied until the third inning when Bowie State's offense erupted. The Bulldogs plated eight runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Dunham, surging ahead 9-1.
BSU continued to shut down VSU before adding another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Dillard, extending the lead to 10-1. The score held for the remainder of the game, as the Bulldogs cruised to a dominant victory.
