BOWIE, MD --- On Senior Day, Bowie State softball (15-14, 9-0 CIAA, 4-0 North) delivered a dominant performance, securing a doubleheader sweep over Virginia Union (5-20, 2-5 CIAA, 0-2 North) on Saturday, Mar 29 at the BSU Softball Field. The Bulldogs won game one, 9-1, and game two, 11-8, behind standout pitching from Lindsey George and Ryalee Dillard, along with an explosive offensive effort.
Game One | Bowie State 9, Virginia Union 1
The Bulldogs' ace, George, delivered another stellar performance in the circle, securing her third consecutive division win as Bowie State cruised past Virginia Union, 9-1. The right-hander tossed six strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking only one.
BSU wasted no time getting on the board, striking first in the bottom of the first inning. Jayla Hill put the Bulldogs ahead with an RBI double to open the scoring.
The offense kept rolling in the second inning, tacking on three more runs. A two-run single from Coreena Dunham extended the lead to 4-0, while Bowie State's defense continued to shut down the Lady Panthers.
Virginia Union managed to scratch across a run, trimming the deficit to 4-1, but the Bulldogs quickly responded in the third inning. Mikayla Amos crushed a solo home run—her first at the collegiate level, helping BSU push the lead to 6-1.
The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth, as Amos came through again with a one-out RBI double, making it 7-1. They continued their offensive surge in the sixth inning, plating two more runs, highlighted by Dunham's solo homer, to seal the 9-1 victory.
Bowie State's pitching and defense kept VUU off the board the rest of the way, securing a dominant win as they continued their strong run in division play.
Game Two | Bowie State 11, Virginia Union 8
Dillard picked up the win for Bowie State, tossing five innings while allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits. The right-hander struck out six and walked two in the effort.
At the plate, Ja'chelle Mosley led the Bulldogs' offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Taylor Dawkins stood out today, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Mikayla Amos contributed with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI.
After falling behind 2-0, Bowie State got on the board in the first inning. Dawkins launched a one-out solo home run - her fifth of the season, off VUU's pitcher Skylar Rosembaum.
The Lady Panthers extended their lead to 4-1 before Bowie State responded in the third inning. Dawkins delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Bulldogs then held Virginia Union scoreless and rallied in the fourth, scoring twice to tie the game at 4-4, with one run coming on a single from Siarra Silva.
Virginia Union briefly regained the lead at 5-4, but Bowie State answered in the fifth with a three-run inning. Mosley's two-run single helped propel the Bulldogs to a 7-5 advantage.
Bowie State widened the gap in the sixth, scoring four more runs to make it 11-5, highlighted by another two-run double from Mosley. VUU attempted a late comeback, plating three runs, but the Bulldogs held firm to secure the 11-8 victory.
