PETERSBURG, VA – The Bowie State women's volleyball team (2-10, 0-1 CIAA) dropped its conference opener on the road Thursday night, falling in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) to Virginia State (2-7, 1-0 CIAA) inside the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening set behind an early kill from
Nina Edwards and a service ace from
Lyric Snowden. Despite a rally from the Trojans, Snowden's consistent attacking helped BSU stay within striking distance, while a late block from
Melisa Anacius and
Nicole Taylor trimmed the deficit. Ultimately, the Trojans closed out the set, 25-21.
The second set saw the Bulldogs battle back-and-forth with VSU. Edwards, Snowden, and Taylor each delivered timely kills, while
Abena Asomani-Martin added a block to put BSU ahead midway through the frame. The Bulldogs held a late 17-15 lead, but the Trojans surged late to escape with a 25-23 win.
In the third, BSU once again came out strong, building an 8-6 advantage with plays from Taylor and
Iman Wright.
Marissa Robinson's service ace and Edwards' clutch kills kept the Bulldogs on top 15-12 before the set reached a 21-21 tie. Virginia State, however, managed to take the final four points to seal the match, 25-23.
