Heroes Day / Gold Rush
Saturday's home contest will feature Heroes Day / Gold Rush, celebrating the individuals who serve and make a difference in their communities. Bowie State will recognize heroes from various fields, including military personnel, first responders, healthcare workers and educators, with special recognitions throughout the day. Fans are encouraged to wear gold in support of the Bulldogs. Gold Rush T-shirts will also be distributed while supplies last, adding to the game-day atmosphere as Bowie State welcomes Virginia Union to Bulldog Stadium for a key CIAA contest. This game, Bowie State will honor deans list students at halftimes.

Bulldogs Carry Momentum Into Conference Showdown
Bowie State heads into Saturday's matchup following a dominant defensive performance against Winston-Salem State. The Bulldogs secured a 21-0 victory at Bowman Gray Stadium, holding the Rams scoreless while producing 275 yards of total offense, including 219 rushing yards. Bowie State also forced six turnovers, recording three interceptions and recovering three fumbles.

The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter when Jaylin Solomon scored on a 19-yard touchdown run. Running back Maximus Jones added a nine-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter before defensive back Michael Thompson III returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to seal the shutout. Jones led the Bulldogs with 76 rushing yards and one touchdown on 11 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt. Daniel Coles Jr. added 71 net rushing yards on 13 carries, while quarterback Joshuah Keith contributed 45 net rushing yards. The Bulldogs' ability to establish the run and capitalize on defensive opportunities proved decisive in the road victory.

The win followed an impressive offensive showing against Shaw, when Bowie State totaled 436 yards of offense, including 287 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Coles Jr. rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while Keith completed nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown and added 63 rushing yards and another score. The Bulldogs will look to carry that balanced offensive production into Saturday's matchup.

Defense Looks to Maintain Its Dominant Form
Bowie State's defense has played a major role in the team's recent success, particularly during the shutout victory over Winston-Salem State. The Bulldogs limited the Rams to 223 total yards, including just 85 passing yards, while recording three sacks and forcing three interceptions. Linebacker Ashton Mayeux led the defensive effort with 10 total tackles, including six solo stops, one tackle for loss and two pass breakups. Thompson III added five tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown. Defensive back Chase Francis contributed three tackles, including a sack for an 11-yard loss, as the Bulldogs consistently pressured the Rams. Bowie State will need another disciplined defensive performance against a Virginia Union offense that has demonstrated the ability to control possession and generate production on the ground. Limiting explosive plays, winning on early downs and creating turnovers will be important as the Bulldogs attempt to slow the Panthers' attack.

Scouting the Virginia Union Panthers
Virginia Union enters Saturday's matchup at 5-1 overall and 4-0 in CIAA play after winning five consecutive games following its season-opening loss to Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Panthers most recently defeated Elizabeth City State University, 20-7, on Oct. 3 before entering a bye week. Virginia Union relied on its rushing attack and defensive consistency in the victory over the Vikings, finishing with 289 total yards, including 223 rushing yards. Running back Travon Tensley led the Panthers with 123 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while quarterback RJ Rosales completed all nine of his pass attempts for 66 yards and a touchdown. Rosales also added 17 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Panthers limited Elizabeth City State to 196 total yards and recorded four sacks. Christian Aiken paced the defense with 11 tackles and a sack, while Ahmad Ross added 10 tackles and a sack. Elijah Candia contributed eight tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack, and Joseph Brooks recorded two sacks. Virginia Union's combination of a productive ground game and a disruptive defense presents a significant challenge for Bowie State. The Bulldogs will look to establish their own rushing attack, protect the football and take advantage of scoring opportunities against a Panthers team that has allowed just seven points in each of its last two victories.

Series History
Saturday's contest continues a longstanding CIAA rivalry between Bowie State and Virginia Union. According to Bowie State's official series history, the teams are tied at 8-8 in their meetings dating back to 2009. Virginia Union has won the last four meetings, including a 24-7 victory over the Bulldogs on Oct. 25, 2025, in Richmond, Va. Bowie State will look to reverse that recent trend and defend its home field as the Bulldogs pursue another important conference victory. With both programs seeking to strengthen their positions in the CIAA standings, Saturday's matchup offers an opportunity for Bowie State to make a statement against one of the conference's unbeaten teams.

Bulldogs Look to Extend Winning Streak at Home
Saturday's contest represents another important test for Bowie State as the Bulldogs continue their 2026 campaign under head coach Dawson Odums. After opening the season with three consecutive losses, Bowie State has responded with three victories in its last four games, including a pair of conference wins and a shutout on the road. The Bulldogs will look to build on that progress in front of the home crowd, relying on their rushing attack, defensive pressure and ability to create turnovers. A strong performance against Virginia Union would provide Bowie State with another opportunity to gain ground in the CIAA race as the season enters its second half.

Up Next
Following Saturday's matchup against Virginia Union, Bowie State will remain at Bulldog Stadium for its 91st Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 24, when the Bulldogs host Johnson C. Smith University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
