Bulldogs Battle Through Three Close Games at HBCU Invitational

COVINGTON, GA — The Bowie State softball team (0-5) endured a challenging day at the HBCU Softball Invitational on Saturday, dropping three closely contested games to Albany State, Alcorn State and Claflin at the Turner Lake Softball Complex.

Game One: Albany State 8, Bowie State 7
Bowie State suffered a walk-off loss in the opener, falling 8–7 to Albany State University after a pair of unearned runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs out-hit Albany State, 9–7, and erased an early deficit to take a 7–5 lead in the top of the fourth inning when an error brought in a run and Audrey Newell followed with a two-run single. ASU responded with a solo home run in the fifth to trim the margin before capitalizing late.

India Stokes led BSU at the plate with three hits, while Newell drove in two runs. Mikayla Amos and Ja'chelle Mosley each recorded multiple hits. Alycia Searwar started in the circle and allowed five runs (one earned) over three innings.

Game Two: Alcorn State 9, Bowie State 8
The Bulldogs came up just short in an 9–8 setback to Alcorn State despite a strong offensive showing.

Bowie State struck early in the first inning as Coreena Dunham launched a two-run homer to center field and Taylor Dawkins added an RBI double to give the Bulldogs a 3–0 lead. Amos extended the advantage with a solo home run in the third.

Alcorn State answered with six runs in the fourth inning to swing the momentum, and added an insurance run in the fifth. Bowie State mounted a late comeback but was unable to complete the rally.

Amos finished 3-for-4 with a home run, while Dunham and Amos each drove in three runs. Presleigh Braxton and Lisa Frias posted multi-hit games, and Braxton added two stolen bases as the Bulldogs totaled three steals. Amos went four innings in the circle, striking out four.

Game Three: Claflin 3, Bowie State 0
In the night cap, Bowie State was edged 3–0 by Claflin University in a pitchers' duel.

After five scoreless innings, Claflin broke through in the sixth with a two-run double. Sydney Seals delivered a strong performance for the Bulldogs, going the distance while allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and striking out nine.

BSU showed patience at the plate, drawing nine walks. Stokes and Mosley led the Bulldogs with two walks apiece, but the Bulldogs were held hitless as Claflin turned two double plays to secure the win.
