SALEM, VA — The Bowie State softball team (3-11) earned a pair of wins Saturday at the Moyer Complex, defeating Concord 4-1 in the opener before securing a 5-1 victory over Salem to complete the sweep.
Game One: Bowie State 4, Concord 1
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening inning when
Presleigh Braxton reached third on an error and later scored on a groundout by
Taylor Dawkins to give Bowie State an early 1-0 advantage.
BSU added to its lead in the third inning.
Coreena Dunham singled to spark the rally and later scored as the Bulldogs plated two more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from
Mikayla Amos to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Dunham led off with a bunt single and Braxton drew a walk to load the bases. Dawkins laid down a bunt that resulted in an error, allowing
Margaret-Malaika Weaver to score and push the lead to 4-0.
CU managed to score a run in the seventh inning, but Bowie State closed out the game to secure the 4-1 victory.
Sydney Seals delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five over seven innings.
Dunham recorded two hits and scored twice to lead the Bulldogs offensively, while Amos drove in two runs.
Game Two: Bowie State 5, Salem 1
Bowie State carried its momentum into the second game, rallying past Salem for a 5-1 win.
Salem took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning following a Bowie State error. The Bulldogs responded in the fifth inning when
Nya Howard reached base and later scored on a triple by Dunham to even the score at 1-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth inning when pinch runner
India Stokes scored on a groundout to give Bowie State a 2-1 advantage.
Bowie State added three insurance runs in the seventh inning. Braxton doubled to drive in pinch runners
Ryan Fraser and
Kyla Richardson, and
Aaliyah Amos followed with an RBI single to bring Braxton home and extend the lead to 5-1.
Amos earned the win in the circle, striking out seven and allowing four hits and one unearned run over seven innings.
Braxton led the Bulldogs offensively in the nightcap with three hits, including two doubles, while Dunham added a triple and an RBI. Howard also crossed the plate twice for Bowie State.
