WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bowie State softball team (1-11) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Frostburg State on Sunday at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy, falling 9-1 in game one before a 15-0 loss in game two.
Game One: Frostburg State 9, Bowie State 1
Frostburg State used early offense to take control of the opener and secure a 9-1 victory over Bowie State.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Izabella Don connected on a three-run home run. Bowie State answered in the bottom half of the inning as Ryan Fraser scored on an RBI single from Soleil Bond-Johnson to cut the deficit to 3-1.
FSU extended its lead in the third inning with a two-run home run from Arden Miller to make it 5-1. Both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings before the Bobcats added insurance in the sixth. After taking advantage of a BSU error, Don hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to extend the lead to 9-1.
Sydney Seals started in the circle for Bowie State, pitching five innings while allowing nine hits and eight runs (six earned). She recorded three strikeouts and three walks. Makayla Drakeford pitched one inning in relief, allowing one run on one hit and one walk.
Bond-Johnson recorded a hit and RBI to lead the Bulldogs offensively, while Fraser scored Bowie State's lone run of the game.
Game Two: Frostburg State 15, Bowie State 0
Frostburg State carried its momentum into the second game, scoring 15 runs to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a five-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Arden Miller to take an early 5-0 lead. FSU added another run in the fourth when Ryann Durnal scored on a bunt single by Gracie Nelson to push the lead to 6-0.
The Bobcats broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating nine runs on a series of walks and base hits, including a two-RBI double from Miller.
The Bulldogs finished with three hits in the contest but was unable to push a run across the plate.
Alycia Searwar started in the circle for BSU and pitched four innings, allowing five hits and six runs (four earned) with two strikeouts and four walks. Aaliyah Amos worked one inning in relief.
Audrey Newell led Bowie State with a double and a walk, while Taylor Dawkins and Angelina Nguyen-Nhu each added a hit. Nguyen-Nhu also recorded six putouts defensively.
