ETTRICK, VA — The Bowie State softball team (12–16, 8–0 CIAA, 2-0 North) swept Virginia State in a conference doubleheader on Friday, earning a 10–0 run-rule victory in game one before edging the Trojans 6–5 in game two at the VSU Softball Field.
Game One: Bowie State 10, Virginia State 0 (5 innings)
Bowie State delivered a dominant offensive and pitching performance, scoring 10 runs on nine hits while holding Virginia State scoreless.
The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning.
Mikayla Amos walked and advanced on a wild pitch, while
Aaliyah Amos reached on an error.
Sydney Seals followed with an RBI double to left-center to give BSU a 1–0 lead.
In the third inning,
Coreena Dunham singled and stole second before
Presleigh Braxton singled her to third.
Taylor Dawkins then delivered a two-run single to left-center to extend the lead to 3–0.
BSU broke the game open in the fifth inning. Dunham tripled to lead off the frame and later scored on a Braxton single.
India Stokes capped the inning with her first home run as a Bulldog, a three-run blast that helped secure the 10–0 run-rule victory.
Seals tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out three.
Game Two: Bowie State 6, Virginia State 5
The Bulldogs battled through a back-and-forth contest before pulling away late to complete the sweep.
BSU opened the scoring in the first inning. Dunham and Braxton executed a double steal, allowing Dunham to score.
Aaliyah Amos added a sacrifice fly to bring home Braxton for a 2–0 lead. VSU responded with two runs in the bottom half to tie the game.
The Trojans added two more runs in the third to take a 4–2 advantage, but Bowie State answered in the fourth.
Santanna Puller doubled and scored on a hit by
Lisa Frias, and Dawkins followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 4–4.
Virginia State briefly regained the lead in the fifth, but the Bulldogs responded when Stokes scored on an RBI single by Abdul-Khabir to even the score at 5–5.
In the sixth inning, Dawkins scored the go-ahead run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Bowie State's defense held firm in the seventh to secure the 6–5 victory.
