PETERSBURG, Va. - The Bowie State men's and women's cross-country teams competed Friday at the VSU Cross Country Challenge, hosted by Virginia State University at Randolph Farms in Petersburg, Va. The Bulldogs delivered solid performances against a competitive field, with the women's team finishing fourth and the men's team placing fourth overall.
Bulldog Women Finish Fourth
The Bowie State women's team finished fourth with 82 points, tying Virginia State for third place but finishing behind the Trojans based on the meet's scoring procedures. VCU won the women's team competition with 20 points, followed by Regent University with 55 points. Virginia State and Bowie State both finished with 82 points. Leilani Gibson once again paced the Bulldogs, earning a fourth-place overall finish in the 5K with a time of 22:05.2. Gibson averaged 7:06.5 per mile and finished just over one minute behind the individual champion, VCU's Shreya Krishnamurthy. Emetem Bezezuh followed with a 10th-place finish, crossing the line in 23:16.8. Destinie Mayo placed 17th at 25:16.4, while Janelle Morrisey finished 22nd in 27:32.0. Sydney Anderson rounded out the Bulldogs' top five, helping Bowie State secure its fourth-place team finish. Bowie State's top five runners combined for a team time of 2:09:41, averaging 25:56 per runner.
 Bulldog Men Place Fourth
On the men's side, Bowie State finished fourth overall with 102 points, behind VCU, Virginia State and Regent University. VCU captured the team title with 23 points, while Virginia State finished second with 54 points and Regent placed third with 74 points. Sean Trader once again led the Bulldogs, finishing eighth overall in the men's 8K with a time of 30:16.4. Trader averaged 6:05.4 per mile and was the first Bowie State runner across the finish line.Freshman Chase Garcia turned in another strong performance, finishing 13th overall with a time of 32:18.3. Tyon Fowlkes followed in 19th at 34:47.2, while Tyler Bowling crossed the line 35th overall in 38:48.2. Jaieri Barber completed the Bulldogs' scoring five with a 45th-place finish in 45:23.2. The Bulldogs finished with a combined team time of 3:01:33, averaging 36:18 per runner.
The VSU Cross Country Challenge provided both Bowie State squads with another opportunity to compete against regional competition and continue developing as the 2026 season progresses. Gibson and Trader continued to pace their respective teams, while Bezezuh, Mayo, Garcia and Fowlkes also delivered key performances for the Bulldogs. With the championship portion of the season approaching, Bowie State will use the experience gained in Petersburg to continue improving and preparing for its remaining meets.
Bowie State will continue its 2026 cross-country season with the Bison Invitational, hosted by Howard University, before turning its attention toward the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship later in the season.
