TENNIS OPENS SEASON WITH SWEEP OF FAYETTEVILLE STATE

MATCH TWO RESULTS

(BOWIE, Md.)  The Bowie State University women's tennis team finally got to open their 2009 campaign and took full advantage of the opportunity.  BSU's Lady Bulldogs swept the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University 5-4 and 5-4 in conference action.

Senior Danielle Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland), sophomore Kyara Lombre (Mitchellville, MD, C.H. Flowers) and senior Lydia Mahon (Hyattsville, MD, Prince George's CC) lost their respective singles match but  sophomore Chelyce Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland) and seniors Jessica Bond (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy / Emerson Preparatory School) and Jasmine McNair (Germantown, MD, Seneca Valley) won their respecitve #4, #5 and #6 singles matches.  Danielle Fields lost 8-2 to FSU's Ines Nieves, Lombre lost 8-6 to Kristan Tapassi and Mahon dropped an 8-1 decison to Samantha Meeks.  Chelyce Fields won 8-1 over Fayetteville State's Chekimbrel Jefferson.  Bonds defeated Amber Mitchell 8-3 and McNair won 8-4 over Lindsey Dean in singles action.

Bowie State won two of three doubles matches with Chelyce Fields and Lombre winning  #2 by the score of 8-5 and BSU's #3 doubles tandem of Bond and McNair breezed by Virginia Sate's Mitchell and Patterson 8-1.  Fayetteville State's Nieves and Tapassi downed BSU's Danielle Fields and Mahon 8-5 at the #1 doubles position.

Nieves beat Danielle Fields 8-2 in their second singles match of the afternoon and Taprissi along with Meeks had equal success, defeating BSU's Lombre and Mahon respectively 8-3 and 8-2.   Just as in match one, the Bowie State trio of Chelyce Fields, Bond and McNair defeated Jefferson, Mitchell and Dean downed Fayetteville State's  8-3, 8-1 and 8-6 respectively in the #4, #5 and #6 match two singles.

Nieves and Tapassi  took the match two #1 doubles, beating Danielle Fields and Mahonby the score of 8-2 over .  Bowie State won the #2 and #3 match two doubles by scores of 8-2 and 8-1.

The wins get Bowie State off to a 2-0 start while Fayetteville State falls to 0-6 on the season.  Bowie State travels to Virginia State tomorrow (3/7) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Lady Trojans.
