TENNIS GOES 4 AND 5 ON DAY ONE OF CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

DAY ONE RESULTS

(PETERSBURG, Va.)  The 2009 CIAA Tennis Championships are underway on the campus of Virginia State University.  

Danielle Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland)  won her #1 Singles flight, defeating Brittany Shim of Saint Augustine's College.  Saint Augustine's Kira Edgehill defeated Bowie State's Kyara Lombre (Mitchellville, MD, C.H. Flowers) at #2 Singles.  BSU, improved to 2-1 in Singles Flight play as Lydia Mahon (Hyattsville, MD, Prince George's CC) downed Tomia Scott of Saint Paul's College at #3.

Bowie State's Chelyce Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland) and Mahon took their #1 Doubles Quarterfinal Flight, defeating SPC's Edgehill and Shim 8-0.  However, Danielle Fields and Mahon dropped their semifinal match, losing to Shaw University's Lolia Kieka and Fernanda Silva.

Chelyce Fields and Lombre bounced Brittany Laws and Rolanda Sue of Johnson C. Smith 8-4 in the #2 Doubles Flight quarterfinal.  The Shaw combination of Xania Steele and Evan Okafor defeated Chelyce Fields and Lombre 8-4 in the #2 Doubles Flight semifinals.

Danielle Fields and Lombre ended the chilly and wet afternoon with a 3rd place (Doubles Flight #2) finish after defeating Beverly Jefferson and Christina Cochran of Saint Paul's.  The Johnson C. Smith tandem of Tyra Breaux and Melissa Shuler defeated Bowie State's Jessica Bond (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy / Emerson Preparatory School) and Jasmine McNair (Germantown, MD, Seneca Valley) 8-6 in the quarterfinal round of Doubles Flight #3.  

Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs wrap-up day one of the CIAA Spring Championships with a 4-5 record.
