(EMPORIA, Va.) Bowie State University pounded out 27 hits, had four doubles and stroked two home runs, picking up a pair of CIAA wins against Saint Paul's College. The Lady Bulldogs battled back in the opener to capture a 15-7 decision and rolled to an easy 15-2 victory in game two over the Lady Tigers.
Saint Paul's took an early 3-0 first inning lead over the very young Lady Bulldogs before Bowie State closed the gap to 3-2 after three innings of play. Sophomore
Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Hurbert Blake) opened the third with a single and senior
Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) followed with a two-run homer.
Freshmen
Kiara Washington (Bowie, MD, Bowie) pulled the Lady Bulldogs even at 3-3 in the fourth, but Saint Paul's put two in the book in their half of the inning to shift the advantage back over to the Lady Tigers at 5-3.
Bowie State added three runs in their share of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. However, Saint Paul's pushed two across the dish in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead.
Freshman
Adria Lewis (Cumberland, MD, Fort Hill) scored an unearned run the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7.
The Lady Bulldogs came alive in the top of the seventh inning, scoring eight runs on four hits to snatch a 15-7 victory away from Saint Paul's.
McClay, Smith, Lewis and freshman
Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, TX, Los Fresnos) paced Bowie State with a pair of hits each. McClay was responsible for four RBI in game one and Hernandez relieved sophomore
Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) in the fifth to pick up the win.
The roles reversed in game two as Bowie State jumped on Saint Paul's pitching early to take a 5-0 advantage in the top of the first inning in game two. BSU's Lady Bulldogs added four more in the third for a comfortable 9-1 lead.
Bowie State scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning and was never threatened by the Lady Tigers in the finale of the afternoon.
Saint Paul's match their game one total of seven hits in game two, but committed three errors and seven errors overall.
Smith, Hernandez, Alexander and sophomore
Amanda Ray (Damascus, MD, Damascus, Mount St. Mary's) led Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs with three hits each in the nightcap. Lewis was BSU's top RBI producer in game two with a game-high six.
Hernandez notched her fourth win of the season, striking out three and allowed just two hits.
Bowie State (11-10, 7-1 CIAA, 2-0 North) is scheduled to host Division I Howard University on Wednesday (March 30) at 12 noon, weather permitting.
