UNIVERSITY OF D.C. TAKES THREE SET VICTORY OVER LADY BULLDOGS

(BOWIE, Md.) The University of the District of Columbia improved their record to 4-5 after knocking off Bowie State University 3-0 in a non-conference match of cross-town rivals. The setback dips Bowie State to 0-6 on the year.

The University of the District of Columbia held a 20-6 lead in the first set before Bowie State rallied back to pull within five at 20-15, but managed to hold on to take the first set. The BSU Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in set two, but UDC countered with a 19-0 run take control of the set.

The third set was much like the first set. The UDC Firebirds held narrow leads most of the set, but never relinquished the lead. Bowie State trailed 16-12 on a kill by freshman Briana Ford and pulled to within three (16-13), but would get no closer.

Grace DeMichaelis ended the match with a game-high 10 kills to go along with nine assists to lead the University of the District of Columbia. UDC's Vanessa Garley contributed nine kills and nine digs and Mirella Nunes added a match-high six service aces to go along with five kills.

Bowie State was led in kills by freshman Jenahye' Johnson and Ford with five and four respectively. Freshman Paige McIntosh accounted for all 10 Bowie State assists. Freshman Cara Nance recorded three service aces and seven digs, both team-highs and added two block assists. McIntosh and Ford paced the Lady Bulldogs with three block assists each.

Bowie State returns to action this weekend, when they travel to Hampton, VA for the CIAA Round-Up, facing Johnson C. Smith University on opening day at 6 pm. All matches will be played at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
