Box Score (BOWIE, Md.) Virginia State held Bowie State to a season-low 27 percent shooting from the field and upset the 19th ranked Bulldogs 67-57. Kenny Mitchell and Ibn Rassoull led the Trojans in scoring with 19 points each. The Bowie State loss was also the Bulldogs' lowest point total since February 10, 2011 at Elizabeth City State.
The Bulldogs jumped out the gates early, opening up a 13-4 lead. At the 14:34 mark of the first half, the Trojans finally began to find the basket on a consistent basis. Virginia State shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, making 11-of-20 shots.
Bowie State held a 10 point advantage (30-20) following a 3-pointer by senior
Jay Gavin with three minutes left in the opening period. However, Virginia State answered with an 8-2 run in the final 2:48 to pull the Trojans within four (32-28) by halftime.
The Bulldogs struggled from the field in the first half, making only 10-of 34 from the field that included 5-of-17 beyond the arc. Fortunately for Bowie State, free throw shooting was much better in the first half as the Bulldogs stuck 7-of-8.
Rassoull scored five of Virginia State's first second half points to close the Trojans deficit to 35-33. A Mitchell lay-up tied the game at 35-35 and Rassoull made a pair of free throws to shift the advantage over the visitors' side of the scoreboard.
Bowie State junior Byron Westmorland made his second field goal of the second half to knot things up at 37 with 13:36 remaining in the game.
The lead changed hands three times over the next 11 minutes. Following a free throw by Bowie State senior
Travis Hyman, the Bulldogs held a slim 54-53 lead with 2:06 left to play. Before that, Bulldogs senior
Darren Clark tied the game at 53-53 on a deep 3-point field goal. Unfortunately, that would be Bowie State's last field goal until Clark lay-up with two ticks left on the clock.
With the score tied at 55-55, off-setting technical fouls on VSU's Mitchell and BSU's Hyman combined with another Hyman personal and technical, gave the Trojans four free throws. Virginia State's Mike Bynum and Daniel Awosanya made all four freebies. In fact, the Trojans' final 12 points of the game all came via the charity stripe.
Virginia State (7-17, 6-8, 3-5) made 21-of-44 field goals on the afternoon (48 percent) and 21-of-29 free throws (72 percent).
Bowie State struggled even more from the field in the second half, making just 9-of-36 (25 percent), 2-of-18 behind the 3-point line (11 percent) and 5-of-10 free throws.
Clark was the only Bulldogs player to reach double figures, scoring 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Hyman led both teams on the glass with 10 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots.
Bowie State will wrap-up the conference portion of the season at Virginia Union on Monday (February 20th) before closing out the regular season at home (February 25) in a non-conference game against Washington Adventist University.
