MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University women's tennis team earned their first CIAA win of the season with a 9-0 victory over Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play while the Lady Bulldogs start the year 0-1 overall and in CIAA play.
Every Hawk in the lineup earned victories on Saturday as they swept the Lady Bulldogs in both doubles and singles play.
Natalya Kamenshchikova/Holly Stambaugh teamed up to blank
Amber Peters and
Antonique Johnson 8-0 to start out doubles play. Breanne Johnson/Natalia Andrade defeated Oyabode Sodipo and
Channae Manning 8-1 and Jessica De Backre/Jennifer Humphrey topped
Brianna Burke and
Rahwa Habtemariam 8-0.
The Hawks continued to dominate in singles play. Kamenshikova cruised past Peters 6-3, 6-0 while Johnson topped Sodipo 6-1, 6-1. Stambaugh blanked Johnson 6-0, 6-0 and De Backre battled past Manning 6-1, 6-0. Andrade earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Burke and Staffari Cleveland defeated
Mieke Allen 6-3, 6-0 to round out the 9-0 win for the Hawks.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to earn their first win of the season with the take on Elizabeth City State on Sunday (2/24) at 11 am.
