BOWIE, Md. – A very shorthanded Maryland Eastern Shore women's tennis team was no match for Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs strolled to a 9-0 non-conference shutout over the Division I Lady Hawks on Senior Day. The Bowie State win squares the Lady Bulldogs season record at 6-6 while UMES falls to 0-15 overall.
In doubles action, the sophomore duo of
Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) and
Amber Peters (Laurel, Md.) topped Jasmine Jennings and Reine Fowajuh 8-2 in the first flight. Seniors
Iyabode Sodipo (Baltimore, Md.) and
Brianna Burke (Boston, Mass.) edged the UMES combination of Petra Jerabkova and Alex Manoloca 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) in the number two position. The Lady Hawks defaulted to Bowie State junior
Channae Manning (Lanham, Md.) and
Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) at number three doubles.
Bowie State's Sodipo took down Fowajuh at number one singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. BSU's Burke breezed by UMES' Jennings 6-1 and 6-1. Johnson kept the streak going for the Lady Bulldogs at number three singles, defeating Jerabkova 6-2 and 7-5 and Habtemariam held off a pesky Maolova 6-4 and 8-6 at number four singles. Bowie State won by default at number five and six singles to close out Senior Day.
