Bowie State Women’s Tennis Splits a Pair of CIAA Round-Up Matches

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Bowe State University women's tennis team split a pair of conference matches over the weekend (3/5-6) at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-Up at Lions Park. The Lady Bulldogs blanked Fayetteville State University 9-0 on Saturday (3/5) before falling 7-2 to Shaw University on Sunday (3/6).  FAYETTEVILLE STATE RESULTS        SHAW RESULTS
 
The Lady Bulldogs earned wins at #1 and #2 doubles (8-0, 8-1) and also claimed victory at the No. 3 doubles by default.
 
Bowie State senior Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) won her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Fayetteville State's Selena Cox. Sophomore Dainese Smothers (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Sharaya Dunwell (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0.
 
Senior Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in her No. 4 singles matchup against Caitlyn Gilliam while freshman Madeleine Ndema took down Fayetteville State's Octavia Gilmore at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Lady Bulldogs senior Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) won by default at No. 6 singles.
 
The Shaw University women's tennis team downed the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State, 7-2 on Sunday (March 6) to conclude the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-Up.
 
The Lady Bears earned two wins in doubles (8-2, 8-1) before forfeiting the No. 3 doubles.
 
With only five players, Shaw won 5-of-6 singles. Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) won the first set (6-0, 6-0) over Peters and Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) secured the No. 2 singles with match sets (6-1, 6-1) against Smothers.
 
Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) claimed the third spot in the lineup, topping BSU's Dunwell (6-0, 6-1), while Anadrijana Martic (Belgrade) swept the fourth spot with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Johnson. Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) gave the Lady Bears the fifth slot with 6-0, 6-0 win versus Ndema.
 
The Bowie State duo of Ndema and Habtemariam were awarded the default victory at No. 6 doubles.
 
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday (March 12) at Virginia Union University in a CIAA matchup. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at Battery Park.
