NAGS HEAD, N.C. – Bowie State University finished second among Northern Division teams in the CIAA Bowling Round-Up, which concluded Sunday (Feb. 10). The Bulldogs posted a 11-4 mark in the three-day tournament, which was held at the OBX Bowling Center and hosted by Elizabeth City State University, hold an overall record of 35-15.
On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated Livingstone (742-598), Shaw (721-580), Saint Augustine's (633-605) and Johnson C. Smith (742-525) but lost to Sothern Division nemeses Fayetteville State (845-784). On Saturday, they Bulldogs downed Johnson C. Smith (713-517) and Saint Augustine's (765-686) before coming up short against Fayetteville State (804-778). Bowie State got back into the win column, ending the day with wins over Shaw (747-597) and Livingstone (804- 645).
In Sunday's Baker matches, the Bulldogs topped Shaw (781-624), Saint Augustine's (689-630) and Johnson C. Smith (686-561) for the third time. However, Bowie State was defeated by Livingstone (747-717) and nipped by Fayetteville State (799-792).
Senior
Diamond Carter was the top bowler for the Bulldogs with a 171.67 average which was third best overall among all bowlers.
Cayla Snowden ranked second on the team in scoring average (162.40) followed by fellow freshman
Taylor Harris (144.29). Junior
Bre'Ana Jones participated in seven games and averaged 141.29. Graduate student
Shannon Weaver average 138.00 over eight games and senior
NaVaughn Barnes rounded out Bowie State's rollers with a 128.56 over nine games.
Virginia State placed first overall in the North (11,741 total pins), followed by Bowie State (11,091), Virginia Union was third (10,378), Chowan placed fourth (9,201) and Elizabeth City State finished fifth in the division (8,563).
The Bulldogs return to action on March 8-10 in the CIAA Bowling Event III. The tournament will be held in Fayetteville, N.C.
