Bowie State’s Dr. Sean Coleman Awarded the DII Faculty Athletics Representative Newcomer of the Year

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), Dr. Sean T. Coleman, has been awarded the NCAA's Division II FAR Newcomer of the Year. The Newcomer of the Year is defined as someone who has served their institution as faculty athletic representative (FAR) for less than five years. Coleman took the role of FAR at Bowie State in fall 2021.

"I am truly honored and humbled to receive the Division II FAR Newcomer Award," said Dr. Coleman. "The FAR work is only accomplished through support and professional learning from the more experienced CIAA FAR's and my FAR contemporaries."

The award is given out annually by the Faculty Athletics Representative Association (FARA) a national organization of faculty representatives from all three divisions of the NCAA. Each year they award a FAR of the year and FAR newcomer of the year for all three divisions.

"When I approached Dr. Sean Coleman seeking his permission to move his name forward to President Breaux to become the next Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for BSU athletics, he responded quickly in confirming his interest in serving," said Doughty, Jr.

"Following the approval of President Breaux, Dr. Coleman has worked diligently to become highly involved with the inner workings of collegiate athletics.  Dr. Coleman is a self-motivated individual who works hard in understanding his responsibilities and is always present to assist coaches, students, and student-athletes with academic excellence.  The award bestowed upon him by the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative Association as FAR New Comer of the Year provides proof of his emergence as a leader in the field of leadership.  BSU Athletics is extremely grateful and blessed to have Dr. Coleman as our FAR."

There are currently 309 Division II universities and colleges. This award is based on Coleman's nominations and contributions. He was nominated by Dr. Cynthia Brown-Williams, the CIAA's FAR President and supported by Doughty, Jr. In just a short time as the Bulldogs FAR, Dr. Coleman has played a key role in bridging the gap between athletics and the university. He currently serves as the Vice President of the CIAA FARA.

"Thank you to Dr. Cynthia Brown, President of the CIAA FARA, for the nomination. I am also thankful to have great collaboration with Mr. Clyde Doughty, Jr.,  VP for Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation and his Staff, as well as immense leadership guidance and support from President Aminta Breaux. This award shines on the blended community of CIAA FARA and Bowie State University."

Dr. Sean T. Coleman currently serves as an Associate Dean of the College of Education at Bowie State University. In addition to his FAR duties, Coleman teaches doctoral courses related to social justice, comprehensive schooling and leadership, statistics, and research methodology. His other responsibilities lend to active membership in University, College, and Departmental committees.
