BOWIE, Md. – The No. 3 Bowie State women's tennis team will face No. 2 Johnson C. Smith in the 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Semifinal on Friday, Apr. 29. The match is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex on the campus of Virginia State University.
The tournament is free and open to the public.
The Bulldogs (11-3) topped Livingstone, 7-0 to advance to the semifinal round – the programs first ever appearance behind CIAA Player of the Year, All-CIAA honoree and sophomore Afruica Gentle (Georgetown, Guyana) who remains unbeaten at 9-0 overall at the No. 1 position.
Additionally, Bowie State had two more players named to the All-Conference Team in sophomore Tamia Byrom (Upper Marlboro, MD) and freshman Kayla Lowery (Cleveland, OH). Byrom enters Friday's competition on an eight-match winning streak at the No. 4 position and an 11-1 record while Lowery is 7-3 overall and has won her last five matches at singles No. 2.
Johnson C. Smith (10-9) defeated Virginia State, 7-0 to punch their ticket to the semifinals. Friday's match will be the second time Bowie State and Johnson C. Smith will meet on the court. JCSU took a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs back on Mar. 18 during the CIAA Round-Up in Bowie, Md. The Golden swept doubles, including a 6-0 decision at both the No. 2 and 3 doubles and earned wins at the singles 2, 3 and 4 respectively. The Bulldogs lone point came from Gentle's 8-4 win at the No. 1 slot.
The winner will advance to the CIAA Championship on Saturday, Apr. 30 and will face the winner of No. 1 Shaw and No. 5 Winston-Salem State.
