Women’s Tennis to Welcome Virginia State For a CIAA Match-Up

BOWIE, MD --- The Bowie State women's tennis team welcomes Virginia State for a Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) match on Tuesday, April 1 in Bowie, Md. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the BSU Athletic Tennis Courts.

The Match Up

  • This is the 32nd meeting between the Bulldogs and the Trojans.
  • BSU is searching for their third win against VSU since 2009.
  • Virginia State is currently on a five-match win streak entering Tuesday's tilt.

About Bowie State 
Bowie State (2-5, 0-4 CIAA) is still in search of its first conference win of the season and will look to get back into the win column at home. 

Torrienne Emery has picked up a team-leading four wins at the No. 1 singles position, highlighted by a 6-3, 6-1, 10-8 triumph against the Shepherd Rams last Saturday. The doubles duo of Emery and Kayla Lowery has proven to be a formidable duo notching four victories on the season while the duo of Verneice Herndon and Nakari Blunt has picked up three victories through seven matches. 

Last Time Out for the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs fell short against the Rams 5-2 on Saturday, Mar. 29 in Shepherdstown, W.V. BSU dropped both doubles matches but picked up two wins in singles play when Emery and Tamia Byrom both earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, respectively.

About the Virginia State
Virginia State (6-5, 4-2 CIAA) looks to continue its winning ways as the Trojans are on a two-match win streak entering Tuesday's contest. VSU is currently ranked second in the Northern Division. 

Alexcie Burrows leads the way for the Trojans, picking up eight victories in singles play, while Ashleigh Charles has six through 11 matches. In doubles play, the duo of Burrows and Ginger Johnson have tallied five victories, winning their last matchup 6-0 against Marymount. 

Last Time Out for the Trojans 
Virginia State had a strong performance winning their non-conference matchup against Marymount, 5-2 at home in Ettrick, Va. 

VSU picked up the doubles point, securing two victories from the pairs of Burrows/Johnson and Charles/Geena Williams. Meanwhile, in singles play, the Trojans dropped the first two matches but picked up the remaining four points in dominant fashion winning in straight sets in each of the four matches. Damita Boller shined in the fifth spot securing a victory by way of 6-0, 6-2.
