Women’s Tennis Set to Battle Bluefield State in Divisional Doubleheader

BOWIE, MD --- The Bowie State women's tennis team will travel to Southern West Virginia to take on Bluefield State for a Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 in Bluefield, W.V. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Lotito City Park.

The Match Up

  • This is the third meeting between the Bulldogs and the Big Blue.
  • BSU took care of BLU in their last match up winning 4-3 on Apr. 22, 2024, in Bowie, Md.
  • Bluefield State is currently undefeated in conference play entering Saturday's tilt.

The Bulldogs continues their pursuit of their first conference victory and aims to bounce back with a strong showing at home.
 

Torrienne Emery leads the team in singles wins, securing four victories so far, including a dominant straight-set performance earlier this season. In doubles action, Emery and Kayla Lowery have established themselves as a reliable duo with four wins, while Verneice Herndon and Nakari Blunt have teamed up for three victories in five outings. 

Last Time Out for the Bulldogs
Bowie State came up short in its latest matchup against Virginia State on Tuesday, Apr. 1, falling in both doubles and singles competition.

In doubles play, Emery and Lowery teamed up but were unable to overcome their opponents, dropping a 6-1 decision. Blunt and Herndon also put up a strong effort but fell 6-2. 

Herndon provided the Bulldogs' lone victory in singles, battling to a three-set win at No. 4 (6-2, 4-6, 10-7). Emery faced a tough challenge at No. 1, falling 6-0, 6-0, while Lowery fought hard at No. 2 but was defeated 6-0, 6-1. Blunt rounded out the singles matches at No. 3, falling 6-2, 6-2. 

About Bluefield State
Bluefield State (5-2, 4-0 CIAA, 3-0 North)  is currently on a two-match win-streak heading into Saturday's matchup. The Big Blue remain unbeaten in conference play, securing the top spot in the CIAA Northern Division.
 

Big Blue are anchored by Ekin Ozmen, this weeks CIAA Player of the Week. Ozmen finishing 2-1 at the No. 1 doubles spot with victories over Elizabeth City State (6-1) and West Liberty (6-4).

In singles action, she dominated at No. 1, defeating Elizabeth City State 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, she went undefeated, securing wins against West Virginia State (1-6, 6-1,10-2) and West Liberty (4-6, 6-0,10-3). 

Last Time Out for the Big Blue 
Bluefield State earned a 5-0 victory over Elizabeth City State to remain unbeaten in CIAA play on Saturday, Mar. 29 in Bluefield, W.V.
 

The Big Blue claimed the doubles point with commanding performances, as Raajitha Koganti and Ozmen secured a 6-1 win at No. 1, while Isabella Disibbio and Adriana Torroba dominated No. 3 with a 6-0 victory. 

In singles action, B-State took control early, winning four matches in straight sets to clinch the sweep. Ozmen led the charge at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win, followed by Torroba at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0) and Koganti at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0). Disibbio sealed the match at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Bowie State will travel to Richmond, Va., to tangle CIAA rival Virginia Union in a Northern Division match on Saturday, Apr. 12. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
