Andrew Engel (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill, Colby C.C.) added one triple each. Bowie State controlled the glass, ourtrebounding Shaw 22 to 12 in the first period.
Bowie State held a seven point advantage twice in the first half, 13-6 at the 12:47 mark and 31-24 with 35 seconds remaining before halftime. Shaw held a brief three point lead (22-19) at the 5:35 mark after a 3-point bucket by Will Graham (Minneapolis, Minn.). Bowie State took a 31-26 advantage into the half with Massey and Crews leading the way with nine points apiece.
Rodney Callwood hit four-of-five from the field during the first period to lead the Bears with nine points at the break. Shaw made only one-of-10 behind the arc with Graham accounting for that.
Shaw (4-10 / 1-5 in the CIAA) experienced their first double-digit deficit with just over 12 minutes left in the game, falling behind 43-32. The Bowie State lead fluctuated between double and single digits over the next nine minutes, allowing Shaw to gain confidence in the waning minutes of the game. BSU's Bulldogs held a 56-45 lead at the 3:06 mark. The Shaw Bears went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 58-55 with eight seconds left to play following a layup by Chris Sellers (Mobile, Ala.). Raheem Smith (Greenville, N.C.) played in key role in the rally, scoring five points.
Smith paced Shaw with game-highs of 18 points and five assists to go along with five rebounds and Callwood was responsible for 16 points. Travis Nelson led the Bears in the rebounding department, collecting six rebounds and added eight points.
The Bowie State Bulldogs (7-6 / 4-2 in the CIAA) return to action Thursday (1/15), traveling to Charlotte (N.C.) to face the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith.
