Corey Camphor (Upper Marlboro, MD, DeMatha) came off the bench to score a career and team-high 14 points and fellow juniors
Charles Richardson (Suitland, MD, Suitland, Montgomery - Takoma Park C.C.) and
Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) added 13 points each to lead Bowie State University to an 86-63 romp over Columbia Union College. The non-conference victory wraps up Bowie State's regular season record at 15-11.
Columbia Union (1-24) started the game red hot. Columbia Union's Pioneers knocked down five 3-pointers in the first six minutes and added Ade Adetosoye added two more triples, helping the Pioneers lead Bowie State's Bulldogs 22-21 at the 9:49 mark of the first half.
BSU's Bulldogs trailed 19-15 before back-to-back 3-pointers by Camphor gave Bowie State the lead for good at 21-19. Bowie State outscored Columbia Union 19-5 over the next four minutes to open a 40-24 advantage and extended that lead to 52- 33 by halftime.
Even with Columbia Union hot start, the Pioneers managed just 12-of-32 (38 percent) from the field in the first half, with eight of those field goals being beyond the arc. Shaheem McNair contributed 12 first half points, knocking down four-of eight beyond the arc and Adetosoye hit three-of-five behind the arc.
Bowie State was on fire in the first half as well, hitting 21-of-35 (60 percent) from the field, including eight-of-12 beyond the arc. Junior
Andrew Engel paced Bowie State in the first period with 10 points on four-of-five shooting. Columbia Union was no match for Bowie State inside as the Bulldogs outscored the Pioneers 22-4 in the paint over the first 20 minutes.
Columbia Union cooled down even more in the second half, making just nine-of-27 (33 percent) from the floor, which included only two-of-eight from long range. Columbia Union had 13 free throw opportunities in the second half, converting 10 and went 11 for 15 (73 percent) on the night from the charity stripe. Adetosoye and McNair led Columbia Union's Pioneers with 20 points apiece. Adetosoye also led Columbia Union with five rebounds and McNair dished out a game-high eight assists.
The Bowie State Bulldogs ended the game with a 52-29 rebound advantage and a 47 percent field goal shooting percentage, making 33-of-72 attempts. Crews and sophomore
Delano Johnson (Baltimore, MD, Dunbar) tied for game-high rebound honors, pulling down nine each. Crews also swatted away a game-high three shots.
Bowie State will enter next weeks CIAA Tournament as the fifth overall seed and will face fourth seeded Saint Augustine's College on Thursday (2/26) at 7 p.m. in the Time Warner Cable Arena.
