DAY ONE RESULTS
(PETERSBURG, Va.) The Saint Augustine's College men and the Bowie State University women are the leaders after the first day of the 2010 CIAA Track and Field Championships held at Rogers Stadium on Virginia State University's campus.
The Falcons are first in the men's standings with 55 points after five events. Bowie State is second with 35 points and Saint Paul's College is third with 28 points. Virginia State is fourth with 21 points.
The Falcons, who are the defending CIAA champions, relied on long-distance and jumping events to grab the early lead. George Smith, Johnny Shuping and Aaron Dudley finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run. Michael Williams won the long jump and Orolando Duffus was second for the Falcons.
In other men's individual events, Hoova Taylor of VSU won the high jump, Fred Boone of Saint Paul's won the pole vault, and
Collen Cumberbatch of Bowie State captured the shot put.
The Lady Bulldogs are atop the women's standings with 51 points after four events. Defending CIAA champion Saint Augustine's College is second with 32 points and Johnson C. Smith University is third with 30 points. Virginia State is fourth with 22 points.
The Lady Bulldogs took the first three places in the shot put.
Kayla Campbell was first,
Lakesha Carney (Hampton, VA, Denbigh) was second and
Brandy Peat (Newport News, VA, Denbigh) finished third.
Shamika Patton added a victory in the 3,000-meter run for the Lady Bulldogs. In other women's individual events, Dominique King of VSU won the long jump, and Nikki Boston of Johnson C. Smith was the winner in the javelin throw.
The CIAA Championships concludes Saturday at Rogers Stadium. The meet starts with the men's javelin at 9 a.m. The running events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay.
